Peter van Niekerk started sailing as a kid in a Piraat. Dutch local wooden optimist, but much slower. As a youngster he sailed mainly on the lakes in classes like Pluis, Flying Junior, Regenboog and later in the X99 keelboat class.He started to sail internationally with Roy Heiner in the match racing circuit. With Roy he also sailed in the 1997 Whitbread race, the 1999 Admirals Cup and the 2000 Olympics. After that he joined Team Alinghi. 2003 and 2007 America’s Cup wins. Last few years he has been active on different ‘big boats’. Like the mighty Black Pearl, Niramo, Rambler88, Comanche and various other superyachts. He has also done a few legs in the last Volvo Ocean Race.
